I couldn't stand it anymore, so I loaded up and hit the closest spot with clear enough water and decent fish numbers that I knew of, which is about 100 miles from home. Despite the high water, wind, and clouds I managed to stab a decent mess midday last Wednesday. In the bunch were 4 of the most colorful male bowfin you'll see. It's not looking good down this way with all the rain and muddy water. Maybe I find some water that doesn't look like chocolate milk in the weeks to come.
