basically get a horizontal shaft with a variety of props. Basically like a smaller version of an airboat except the majority rotate unlike how an airboat uses rudders. They work great. Ive fished on some fan boats and really like them in grass and when the fish are stacked up you dont muddy the water up. Ive been toying with the idea of a fan for a while but just not sure i want to put that money up when my kicker does about 10mph. Down side i see on a fan is speed when you really need to cover water unless you go huge

Met an old pilot that made a motor out of a 10 hp horizontal shaft and a 2x6 prop he cut with a chainsaw. Pushed his 14' Jon pretty good. It was essentially a mini air boat. it could get super skinny too

I get how to make the fan part but I don't know how to build the driving pole at the front of the boat?

You could build it a variety of ways.

essentially it is a pole with chain and sprocket or a drum and cable witch runs the length of the boat and attaches similarly onto a shaft which is connected to the fan motor. turn the handle and it turns the motor.

throttle would be connected on the handle which would also run down the boat to the motor.

that is it in a nutshell.

Carpcrippler has a fan setup on his boat, he could probably answer some questions for you more directly and hands on.

His was a tiller. He had trampoline springs attaching the motor to to mount at all four corners to keep it from turning too sharp and potentially hurting him.

Don't really have anything to add to this but I've been looking into them a little more for my boat. Need a new trolling motor for this spring and was thinking of just going with a fan instead.

How much room do they take up in a boat. I have a 16foot with a counsel so I don't have a lot of room to spare.

It all depends on how you build it, but roughly speaking, your back seat and back generally.

i have seen some builds where the seats are on the back bench and then they fold over in a closed position and the fan goes over them. how wide is your boat nuff?

Also, from what i have gathered doing research for myself. The wider the boat the better and the lower you can make the fan the more stable.

a narrower boat with a high fan could get top heavy with the throttle and the fan facing the side. Something more to think about if you already have a raised deck. Proportion your weight evenly

It's 48 wide and I am building a flush platform for it. Any idea on appox. cost for a little pusher for a 16 foot? Just want it to troll 3-5 mph.
